What the heck is a pywikipediabot?
The short, smartassed answer is that it's a bot powered by pywikipedia scripts.

The longer answer is that it's a great tool which will help you run your wiki more efficiently. However, for reasons of poor documentation on the web, pywikipedia looks much harder to learn than it actually is. Pywikipediabots can be as simple or as complex as you want to make them. But the basic tools of the bot are very simple indeed to use.

Here are some of the simplest things a pywikipediabot can do for you:

  • Change category names. This is something that's simply beyond the capacity of most administrators. There's no "rename" key available for categories — but with a bot, you can do it in a snap!
  • Change templates. Want to retire a template that's used on thousands of pages? Ordinarily you wouldn't be able to, but with a pywikipediabot, you can easily do it.
  • Add a bit of text. Have you invented a new template and are trying to figure out how to get it on hundreds of pages at once? This looks like a job for pywikipediabot!

Intrigued? It's our hope that we've assembled a lot of easy-to-read instructions together in one place. If we've succeeded, you won't have to do a lot of Google searches to figure out how to harness the power of pywikipedia. It'll all be right here, in one of our six main sections:

We're just trying to help out...

This isn't an "official" wiki of any kind. We're just a bunch of Fandoms who've dabbled with pywikipedia over a number of years. We're not intentionally trying to give bad information — but neither is it our job to troubleshoot pywikipedia. We are hobbyists.

There is no warranty, express or implied, as to the suitability of our suggestions for your particular situation. By using the site, you agree that information presented here is on an "as is" basis only.

Again, this site is not maintained by anyone officially connected to Python, nor do we believe that the writers of the open source scripts associated with pywikipedia actually edit here. Your use of this site is strictly regulated by Fandom's Terms of Use, which give you no recourse if following our instructions makes your computer go boom. Although pywikipedia is not typically harmful to computers, it's still a good idea to backup everything before installing and running pywikipedia for the first time.
