Monobook styling requests

The kind of user attracted to this site will likely be the long-term user of the MediaWiki platform. It's therefore to be expected that a lot of the people who come here will probably enjoy editing in the Monobook skin. However, I'm personally more concerned with the future, rather than the past, so I spend very little time in Monobook. I'll need the help of Monobook users to help me style the wiki.

If you see any problems in Monobook, please note them here, and I'll try to fix them. Since my experience of styling Monobook is very much one that began only very recently, I'd appreciate specific code suggestions — especially Monobook-specific CSS selectors — if you can give them.

Yeah, the logo thing was just a quick fix. In fact I'm gonna have to create a new logo that's all on one line. What was there before was ridiculous; at least for the moment you can read the name of the wiki.

The Sidebar does need editing, though I suppose I wasn't so concerned about it given our <100 page count. But still, no biggie to change.

I can see the point of the userlink hover, too.

I guess the only thing I'm not quite understanding is the bit about the preview. What's the error with it? You don't like the link color being white?

Link colours are fine being white if the background is red. If the background is white (as in previwing) you get something like this:

text text text text text link text text text.

Changing the colour to something darker means there aren't random blank patches, and seeing as it's just a preview, I'm not too bothered about adding proper styling to it, when something this simple fixes it.

Oh my apologies, I'm looking at preview in Wikia, where that issue doesn't arise at all. You'll have to forgive me if I'm slow to cotton on to Wall issues because I've only been styling Wall elements for two weeks. I'm not at all used to thinking about it in Wikia — much less Monobook.

Wikia had the sense to use themedesigner colours to style pretty much every selector you'll find in the skin. Sadly Monobook users actually have to know how to write CSS to style it. Keeps me on my toes though, and it's taught me most of what I know about CSS :D

Maybe, but it's a tremendous waste of time, if you ask me. I'd rather learn the CSS necessary to convey meaning, to improve the way that the content of the wiki is displayed — not to just make basic text show up in a skin that, frankly, almost no one uses.

Don't get me wrong: I wish Wikia would keep it simple, stick with Monobook, and let most of the creativity come from individual users. But that's not how it is, so it's kind of a waste of time having to maintain a skin that Wikia have clearly relegated to second-class status.

It's deeply weird to me that we have to periodically clean up Monobook as Wikia advances, but we have no real access to the mobile skin. I'd much rather look forward than to have to maintain the past.

Okay, the Sidebar should be a little better now. Lemme know if you want any other things in there.

Perhaps you're right, but I kind of like not having to use javascript to add things back in that Oasis didn't come with. Expanded navigation is the only thing I've seen made by Wikia that I actually like when it comes to UI, and even then it's missing things like level 3 menus.

I'm likely drawing this waaay off-topic now, but the only reason I can see for having Oasis is to ram adverts down anons throats - it's so easy to misclick an advert and now we get adverts on the new files pop-up? It's just easier for me to make use of a skin no one bothers with.

Regardless, it is always a good idea to make sure you've thoroughly tested something in Oasis if it's site-wide and then worry about monobook assuming it's not skin specific.

Monobook logo changed.

Okay, changed the link color in wall previews. I hate that preview window, though. It's a bitch to restyle. Can't yet figure it out, but I gotta do something about it eventually.

Do you have any experience styling Special:Preferences? Cause I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong with the background.
